Biography

Anna Maria Carl was the daughter of Johannes Carl and Ana Maria Weiss. The name was alternately spelled “Karl” in the German variant, ultimately from Germanic karl ‘man’, ‘freeman’. The Weiss name is German and Jewish (Ashkenazi, or the Jews of Germany). Ashkenaz was the first son of Gomer, and a Japhetic patriarch in the Table of Nations of Genesis 10.

Anna was born on the 9th of March 1727, in Saarland, Germany. She married Johannes Reider in 1745 in Oley, Berks County, Pennsylvania and died in 1800 in Oley at the age of 72. Nothing further is known except that records from the Augustus Lutheran Church in Trappe have their marriage record on file, as well as the record of the burial of Anna and one of her children at the Mennonite Cemetery, “although she was reformed.”

Children

Anna Maria Carl & Johannes Reider were the parents of my ancestor,
