Biography

Archelaus Stowell was born on April 4, 1764, in Ashford, Connecticut. He was the son of Jonathan Stowell and Rhoda Wilson. Archelaus married Olive Bugbee, daughter of Timothy Bugbee and Hannah Wood.

Archelaus was mentioned in six deeds in Mansfield, Tolland County, Connecticut, from 1788 to 1797. He married Olive Bugbee on the 4th of November, 1791, in Ashford, and they had seven known children. The first four were born in Connecticut between 1793 and 1796. The others were born between 1800 and 1808 in Cortland County, New York. Based on these facts, we can conclude that he came to Cortland County between 1796 and 1799. Olive died in 1838 and in 1850 Archelaus was living in Virgil, Cortland County, New York, with his son, Lucas, next door to Lucas’ son, Alvah Stowell. Archelaus died at the age of 87, on the 22nd of July, 1851, in Virgil, and was buried in Forest Hill Cemetery in Blodgett Mills, Cortland County.
