Biography

Edward Hazard, Jr., was born in Rhode Island in 1775 and married Deborah Ballard, with whom he had eight known children. He is mentioned in “History of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania”, by Emily C. Blackman, 1873, Chapter 20, which explains that before the townships of Franklin and Liberty were erected, the entire region was known as “Old Lawsville”. The first family settled in the area around the year 1800 and a handful followed. “No further mention is made of any settlement of this part of Lawsville until 1811, when John Holmes, Edward Hazard, Peleg Butts, Jonathan and Jesse Ross, Caswell and Nathaniel Ives settled on the creek in the north part of the township.” His son, Hiram's obituary indicates he was born in Worcester, New York, in 1804 and the family soon after moved to Great Bend, Pennsylvania where they satayed until about 1817 when they moved to Broome County, New York.

According to Emma C. Hazard Heggeleston’s 1929 account, Edward Hazard, (1773) was a ship-captain for the English Government. His sword was sold for $500. His brother, Raymond, was a sailor, and he had a least one other brother, Joshua (Ioshua). “In the early history of New England colonies we find that Raymond Hazard a ship-captain, was granted permission to leave his native land, England, and that he lived in different parts of what is now Rhode Island. He is mentioned at different places as an honorable councilman”.

Edward died at the age of 87 on April 4, 1863 in Windsor, Broome County, New York, and is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Kirkwood, same County.
