Biography
George Gardiner was born in England and emigrated to America sometime before 1638, when he was admitted an inhabitant of Newport, Rhode Island. He was active in Colonial affairs and was present “att the Generall Courte of election” in 1640. It was around that time that he married Herodias Long, who bore him nine children. Herodias divorced George and he married 2nd to Lydia Ballou, daughter of Robert and Susannah Ballou. He and Lydia had six more children. In Colonial records his name was spelled Gardner, or Gardener, until 1670, when it began to appear as Gardiner.
