Biography

George Rees (or Reese), or perhaps Johann George Rees, was born in 1750 in Pennsylvania, possibly in Schuylkill, during a time when the region was plagued with warfare between the Native Americans and the settlers. He married Magdalene Zerr and fathered at least six children. In 1810 he was living in Hemlock, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, as head of a household of eight people. In 1820 he was counted as head of a household in Madison, same county. (Madison is within 8-10 miles of Hemlock). His sons Abraham, Henry and John were living nearby. His son George Jr. may have been living with him. Other Reese’s in the county in 1820 were Daniel and Vaniah Rees, who lived in Hemlock, John Rees who lived in Briar Creek, and Francis Reese, who lived in Mahoning.

He died at the age of 82 in 1832 in Madison, Columbia County, Pennsylvania, and is buried in Dutch Hill Cemetery in Bloomsburg, same county. (Cemetery located next to Emanuel Dutch Hill Bible Church, 592 Dutch Hill Road, Bloomsburg, PA 17815. There are five people named Reese in the cemetery index, namely George and Magdalene, Catherine “Wife of Abraham” (1790-1867), Mary Reese (1775-1840), and Lydia Reese Reichard (1812-1886).
