Biography

Newman Harvey was born in Rhode Island. He married a woman named Lucy. Their first two children were born in New Salem, Massachusetts, in 1812 and 1820 and their next two, Diana and John, were born in New York in 1821 and 1824, respectively. Therefore, we can conclude that they arrived in New York between 1820 and 1821.

The family lived in Virgil, New York, in 1825, with a man named Elias Harvey living nearby. Also, in 1830, land was transferred from Joel and Polly Harvey to Newman. It was in Lot 67 in Virgil, (now Lapeer). In 1845, Virgil was divided to form the towns of Lapeer and Harford. He was counted on the census in Lapeer in 1855 as a farmer and in 1860 as a retired shoemaker (same place).

Newman died sometime after 1860 and his burial place is unknown. Lucy, the wife of Newman Harvey, was born in Massachusetts or Connecticut in the late 1700’s. Her maiden name is unknown. She died before 1855.
