Richard Seymour

Richard Seymour was born in 1604 and was baptized at Sawbridgeworth, East Hertfordshire District, Hertfordshire, England, on Jan. 27, 1604/5. He married Mercy Ruscoe in Sawbridgeworth and they came to America sometime before 1639, when he was granted lot No. 70, on the north side of Hartford, Connecticut - now North Main Street. He owned other land in West Hartford as well. He was elected as chimney viewer in 1647, an occupation similar to a fire or building inspector of today. He removed to Norwalk around 1650, under Roger Ludlow, and was an original proprietor there. His home stood opposite the Meeting House and Parade Ground on the highway from Stamford to Fairfield. Seymour's name is in the Lodlow agreeement-articles of 1650 and was present at the Runkingheage transaction in 1651. He was elected a townsman, or selectman, there on Mar. 29, 1655, but soon after fell very ill and died sometime later that year. His will was executed on July 29th "and died within the next three months". (Norwalk, by Selleck). He died in Norwalk, Fairfield, Connecticut. He is buried in the Ancient Burying Ground in Hartford.

"Richard Seymour, the first here (in Hartford, CT), lived in 1639 on the east side of Main street. He moved in '55 to Norwalk, a pioneer of that town. His son John married 1664, Mary Watson. He was an original member of the Second Church. Died 1713, leaving a large family. The records of the Second Church, as well as those of the town, show the Seymours to have been strong men, trusted in affairs and looked to for counsel in times of trouble."
