Biography
Samuel Wilbur (or Wilbore) was the son of Nicholas Wilbore and Elizabeth Thickines. He was born between 1596 and 1600, in Braintree, Essex County, England. He married Ann Smith in 1620 and they set sail for America in 1633. Samuel was an early settler in Boston. He was accepted as a freeman there in March of 1633/34. Although he was a large land-owner in Taunton, he was dismissed from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1637/38 for his support of dissenting ministers, Anne Hutchinson and John Wheelwright. They established a settlement at Portsmouth on Aquidneck Island in the Narragansett Bay, which later became the part of the Colony of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations. His cousin, William Wilbore, was another early settler of Portsmouth. Samuel returned to Boston in 1645, later building an iron furnace at Taunton. He owned land in Taunton, Portsmouth and Boston. His will was signed on the 30th of April, 1656 and proved on the 6th of November, 1656. He died in Boston, Massachusetts, on the 29th of September, 1656, at the time the seventh month of the year.
