William Dickinson (II)

William Dickinson (II) was born abt. 1791 in Walkley, Yorkshire, England. Walkley is a suburb of Sheffield. He was baptized at Sheffield, Cathedral Church Of St Peter & St Paul, Yorkshire (West Riding), England, on March 23, 1791. William married on Nov. 29, 1824 at Sheffield, St Mary, Ecclesfield, Yorkshire (West Riding), to Ann Loy, who was born abt. 1806 in Bradfield, Yorkshire. Together they had five known children: Ann, Martha, John, William, Joseph, and Elizabeth Dickinson. In 1841 they lived at Woodstock Bower in Kimberworth, and he was employed as a "Tilter" (Hammersmith). In 1851 they were still in Yorkshire, counted on the Wadsley Bridge district of Ecclesfield, Yorkshire. He was a Journeyman Tilter. In 1861, when the census was taken, he was widowed and living at the Nether Edge Union Workhouse. There was a great flood in Sheffield in 1864, which William survived. He died five months later, though, at Portland Street and was buried on August 25, 1864, at Burngreave Cemetery in Sheffield. (Grave #11, Section M7). There is no headstone marking the spot.

An interesting genealogy called "The Dickinson Genealogy: Study of the ancestry and lineal descent of the Dickinson family", by Philip Pease Dickinson states the following: "The Dickinson forebears migrated from Scandinavia to Normandy about the year 910 A.D., and in turn invaded England from Normandy with William the Conqueror in 1066. They bore the surname Caen, or "de Caen" from the capital city of Normandy. Their sons (De Caensons) and descendants remained in England for 500 years." [Link]
