Biography
Esther Abigail Ensign was the daughter of Royal Ensign and Sally Rood. She was born on the 13th of August, 1826, in Herkimer, New York. She married John Shirley in Lisle on New Year’s Eve, the 31st of December, 1844. She was 18 years old. She died from consumption (tuburculosis) on the 4th of August, 1864, in Richford, Tioga County, New York, at the age of 37, and was buried in Hunts Corners Cemetery in Lapeer, Cortland County, New York. Note: According to the Ensign Genealogy, she died on August 4, 1864. Her gravestone, however, which is barely legible, appears to say she died on 1 Aug 1861 at the age of 37 yrs, 11 mos, 22 days. The letters are severely worn, however, making the 4s look like 1s. Her birth date (Aug. 13, 1826), therefore, was calculated by subtracting her age from August 4, 1864.
