Biography
Ezekiel Mayo was born bet. 1799-1800. He was said to have been born in Broome County, New York, but it is also said that his father was Elisha Mayo and Elisha Mayo was counted on the census in Cherry Valley, Otsego County, New York, in 1800 with no young boys in the home.
Ezekiel married Rebecca Hazard in 1822 and the family moved to Great Bend, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, about 1832. There he cleared his land and erected a stone house. They were counted on the census there in 1840, 1850 and 1860.
"Dutch Settlement.— Ezekiel Mayo came to Great Bend in 1832, and cleared up the farm and erected the stone house where his son Le Roy lives. Eliza, one of his daughters, is the wife of Albert Judd, a farmer in the vicinity. The Dutch settlement is up a little creek that rises in New York and falls into the Susquehanna near Great Bend." (Centennial history of Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, p. 534, R. M. Stocker, 1887).
Ezekiel died on May 16, 1863, in Great Bend. He was about 63 years old. Rebecca died in 1872 and they rest together, side-by-side, in Newman Cemetery in Great Bend, Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania. There are at least 20 Mayos buried there.
