Biography

Jonathan Stowell, Sr. was born in Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, in 1697. He married Margaret Hammond on October 18, 1719, in Newton, Middlesex County, Massachusetts. She died at the age of 27, abt. 1722 and on March 6, 1722/23 he married Margaret Hewett at Roxbury, Massachusetts. In 1728, Jonathan purchased 100 acres of land in Ashford, Connecticut for £110. In that document, his name was spelled Stoel. According to Stowell Genealogy, this was the first time it was found spelled that way. He had been a clothier in Newton, Massachusetts, but in Connecticut he was a farmer.

Jonathan is found in seven deeds in Middlesex from 1718 to 1722, the Ashford deed of 1728, and in ten more deeds in Connecticut from 1733 to 1772. He married third to a woman named Amy, who inherited a third of his estate according to his will, which was probated on the 17th of August, 1776. His daughters, Margaret and Miriam, shared a third and his son’s children shared a third. Jonathan died in 1776 in Ashford, Windham County, Connecticut.
