Biography

Rose Ellen Hollenbeck was the daughter of Jasper Hollenbeck and Mary E. McGinnis. Rose was born on March 26, 1893, in Willet, Cortland County, New York. Her mother was a school teacher. After highschool Rose attended Cortland School of Business. Her first child, William, was born in 1920, when Rose was 27. He was a son of Hugh Reagan, a 40-year old farmer, also of Willet. Whether or not they were married is unknown. The town's marriage records were destroyed by fire. She married Albert Jay Leonard, son of Lewis Leonard and Cora Sherman on the 12th of July, 1922, at the old Hollenbeck homestead in Willet, now Leonard Road. Albert and Rose had one son before they separated. Albert moved and Rose remained on the homestead she owned on the road she named (Leonard Road). She remained single until she died at the age of 81, on the 12th of April, 1974, at Highgate Nursing Home in Cortland, New York. She rests at Marathon Village Cemetery in Marathon.
