Yorktown was a part of the Manor of Cortlandt, a Royal Manor granted by King William III, for the Van Cortlandt family from the Netherlands in 1637. The township was incorporated as Yorktown in 1788. Hamlets in Yorktown include Lake Mohegan, Shrub Oak, Jefferson Valley-Yorktown, Yorktown Heights, and Crompond, which is also partly situated in the town of Cortlandt.
