Ellis Island Records

Ellis Island holds over 51 million immigration and passenger records and offers a free online search. You can order copies of ship manifests for a fee.

In 1897, a fire on the island completely destroyed the original wooded structure built on Ellis Island. Almost all the records dating back to 1855 were destroyed, to the dismay of family historians worldwide.
