The Town of Canaan, also called by it's original name, "Falls Village", was incorporated in October, 1739. The Congregational Church was organized in March, 1741, with Rev. Elisha Webster as pastor. North Canaan was formed from Canaan and was incorporated in 1858. The old Village of Canaan is located in North Canaan, and is not to be confused with the Town of Canaan.
