North Canaan was formed from Canaan and was incorporated in May, 1858. The old Village of Canaan is located in North Canaan, and is not to be confused with the Town of Canaan, which is commonly called by it's original name, "Falls Village". The Congregational Church in Canaan was organized in March, 1741, with Rev. Elisha Webster as pastor. The Congregational Church in North Canaan was organized December 5, 1769.
