Genealogy resources for Stratford, Fairfield County, Connecticut
The locality of Stratford was first settled in 1639, at which time the General Court in Hartford referred to it as the "new plantation at Pequannock". It was also referred to as "Cupheag" in 1640, but the town was officially incorporated as Stratford in 1643. In Colonial times, Stratford and Fairfield were the two main settlements in southwestern Connecticut. Stratford originally incorporated the towns of Shelton, Huntington, Monroe, Nichols, Long Hill, Trumbull, and Bridgeport. The Christ Episcopal Church in Stratford was organized in April, 1707, the first Anglican Church in the Connecticut Colony. From this church, St. Paul's Episcopal Church of Huntington was formed in 1749 as the Parish of Ripton. The Congregational Church at Huntington, called Ripton Parish, was organized Feb. 12, 1724. The Congregational Church at Trumbull, organized in 1730, was formerly called "Unity, of North Stratford". Trumbull was incorporated as it's own town in 1797.
