The town of Norwich was founded in 1659 by settlers from the Saybrook Colony, led by Major John Mason and James Fitch. They purchased the land from Mohegan Sachem Uncas. Norwich was incorporated as a city in 1784. The town of Lisbon was formed from Norwich and was incorporated in 1786. The Congregational Church in Lisbon (Newent Society), located at Jewett City, was organized December, 1723, while Lisbon was still a part of Norwich.
