Genealogy resources for Veteran, Chemung County, New York
The town of Veteran was named in honor of the first settler, Green Bentley, who arrived around 1798, in what was the town of Catharine. Veteran was formed in 1823 as part of Chemung County, while Catharine became a part of Schuyler County. Bentley was a veteran of both the American Revolution and the French and Indian War. The Sullivan Expedition passed through Veteran in 1779, which may explain why there is a hamlet called Sullivanville in the town, along Route 13. Sullivanville was formerly called Deans Corners. Other hamlets in Veteran are Midway, Pine Valley, Rush Run, and Slabtown. The village of Millport (formerly Millvale), is also located in Veteran.
