Joseph Leonard (1767-1842) was in Aurelius in 1800. The township was divided in 1802 to form Mentz, Ira, Throop, Montezuma and Brutus. In 1810 he was counted in Brutus, Cayuga, NY in 1820 with 10 Household members: (4) under 16, (2) 16-24, and (4) 25+ . He was the son of Nathan Leonard. He married Abigail HALL (1769-1859) on 2 Feb 1792 and they had seven known children: Lucy (1792-1872), Clarissa (1795-1858), Samuel Hall (1798-1858), Harriet (1801-1813), Joseph Norman (1804- ), Charles S. (1809-1896), and William LEONARD (1811-1845).

 

He was a brother of Nathan Leonard (1772-1813).

 

Joseph’s son Charles was Overseer of the Poor in Syracuse for several years. His son Joseph Norman LEONARD may be Norman of Skaneateles and Sempronius.

His was one of the Leonard households in Cayuga County in 1820, with a boy fitting Russell Leonard's age.
