This Charles was a Cigar Maker, the son of Chester Leonard (1805-1841) who married Susan Maria Wilson. Chester was a descendant of James Leonard the Iron Master of Taunton, Massachusetts. After Chester died in 1841, his wife and three children lived with Chester’s son-in-law, Campbell Royse. Sarah and Charles married about 1850 and moved to Dansville, Livingston County, New York.
From Owego Tioga County Record, Feb. 6, 1886: "Waverly. J.B. Sliter and Charles Leonard have purchased the wagon and blacksmith shops, corner Broad and Pine streets, known as the old shops of Mullock & Sliter, where they will manufacture wagons and sleighs, and will also be prepared to do all kinds of repairing and re-painting."
From Owego Tioga County Record, Thurs., August 27, 1903: "CHARLES W. LEONARD. Died, suddenly at Dansville, N.Y., Tuesday, August 18, 1903, from heart disease, Charles W. Leonard, aged 74 years. The funeral was held Friday at 4 pm at the residence of his daughter, Mrs. William A. Spinning, Dansville. Rev. Stephen H. Alling, rector of St. Peter's church, officiating. Mr. Leonard was born in Newark Valley 74 years ago and went to Dansville in 1850, where he had since resided. He was a cigar maker by trade for nearly half a century a particular brand which had a large sale throughout that section. Mr. Leonard was also celebrated as a fisherman, and a frequent visitor to the trout streams of that vicinity until his years became too great a burden to him. He is survived by his wife, to whom he was married 54 years ago; and two daughters, Mrs. Henry D. Fisk and Mrs. William A. Spinning, both residents of Dansville."
