James Leonard (1774-1854) was born in New Jersey, the son of Josiah LEONARD (1738-1794) and Anna ROSE. He was a descendant of James LEONARD the Iron Master. He purchased Lot 4 in the town of Throop in 1796 and was counted on the census in Mentz, Cayuga, NY in 1810 with 5 Household members: (3) under 16, (1) 16-24, and (1) 25+ . He was listed in Mentz, Cayuga Co. in 1820, and 1830 as well. He married Susannah CAMPFIELD in 1803 in Morris Co., New Jersey and had at least seven children with her: James was the brother of Manassah who died in 1838.

Note: In 1810 the town of Mentz included Ira, Throop and Montezuma until 1820-1860. Mentz had only just been formed from Aurelius in 1802. Also, Brutus was formed from Aurelius and Locke was formed from Genoa, all only eight years prior, in 1802.

His was one of the Leonard households in Cayuga County in 1820, with a boy fitting Russell Leonard's age.
