Stephen Leonard was a son of Joshua Leonard of Morris County, New Jersey. He was born on July 17, 1753 in New Jersey and was a soldier of the American Revolution, engaged in the Battle of Monmouth in 1778.

 

"Stephen served in Revolutionary War 1 Jun 1778 to 1 Mar 1779 in Captain Richard Cox's Company in the Third New Jersey Regiment commanded by Col. Elias Dayton. Engaged in the Battle of Monmouth 22 Jun 1778. After war, the family moved to Lee, Berkshire Co., MA (abt 1787-1797), then to Herkimer, NY (abt 1799-1802), then to Manlius, NY (abt 1807)." Stephen was twice married - first, to Sybil Hurd (1763-1787) [Findagrave], who died on July 19, 1787, two months after the death of a son, Stephen Leonard, Junior. Stephen remarried in 1788, to Lois Wilcox. [Findagrave]. Stephen died on March 25, 1831. He is buried in the old section of DeWitt Cemetery in DeWitt, Onondaga, New York, also called Orville Cemetery.
