Charles P. Leonard of Lowville, Lewis, New York was born Aug 1826. He was the son of Stephen and JaneAnn, and a descendant of John Leonard of Springfield.

 

From the Lowville Journal Republican 1929: "Charles P. Leonard, born in Lowville, August 22, 1826, died suddenly Monday at his home on State street, death being due to a stroke of apoplexy."

 

From the Lowville Journal Republican, Aug. 29, 1918: "General Martin, by which title he was familiarly known, lived in the stone house from the time of its completion until his death, which occurred December 10, 1834. During this time a large family of six boys and three girls great to manhood and womanhood. Jane married Stephen Leonard, a business man of Lowville, and was the mother of Charles P. Leonard, who was also a business man in Lowville, sole trustee for many years of the school district No. 2, Lowville, and was instrumental in building the brick school house on State street, and was also a leading man in establishing the water system in Lowville."

 

From the Lowville Journal Republican 1904: "Fred Norton and his sister, Miss Lucy Norton, children of the late Levi Norton of Jamestown, NY and nephew and niece of the late Charles P. Leonard, were in attendance at the funeral of their uncle and are staying with Mrs. Leonard. If there is no will found of that late Charles P. Leonard and none has been discovered, Fred Norton, his sister, Lucy, and the children of Frank Norton, deceased, Mrs. Mary Bostwick, wife of L.A. Bostwick, Susan Kellog, wife of K. Collins Kellogg, 2d, with the widow will inherit the estate. The widow will receive one half of the personal and something additional, and the use of one-third of the real estate. One half of his personal property will go to the nephew and nieces above mentioned, and the use of two-thirds of the real estate. A rough estimate of the property, real and personal, is given as $180,000. It may turn out more and possibly less. Mr. Leonard owned a number of farms in Lowville, Martinsburg, and Watson. Mrs. Leonard and Charles E. Pelton have been appointed administratrix and administrator of the estate."

From the Lowville Journal Republican 1902: "Charles P. Leonard has purchased another automobile, this time a 15-horse power two-seater, capable of climbing Tug Hill or speeding through the deep sands of Watson."

 

From the Lowville Journal Republican, January 30, 1902: "Leonard-Herring. At the residence of Deputy County Clerk Charles E. Mitchell, Bostwick street, at 9 A.M. Tuesday, was solemnized the marriage of Mr. Charles P. Leonard and Mrs. M. Josephine Herring, sister of Mrs. Mitchell. The ceremony was performed by Rev. George B. VanDyke, pastor of the Presbyterian church. The wedding was a family affair, and Mr. and Mrs. Leonard left on the 10:08 train south for quite an extended bridal tour. They will visit Albany, New York, Philadelphia, Old Point Comfort, Washington, Richmond, Charleston, Jacksonville, St. Augustine, Tampa, and other cities in Florida. They have the best wishes of their many friends."

 

From the same paper, Feb. 20, 1902: "Charles E. Pelton is the possessor of a live alligator, sent him from Tampa, Fla. by Charles P. Leonard, who with his bride is spending some time in the south."

 

From the Lowville Journal Republican, Dec. 5, 1901: "Charles P. Leonard and Charles E. Pelton left this morning for Rochester."

 

From the Utica Sunday Tribune Dec. 15 1901: "Charles P. Leonard and Charles E. Pelton have each purchased handsome automobiles which will arrive in a day or two. These will be the first owned in Lowville."

 

From the Lowville Journal Republican: "Beats Them All. Charles P. Leonard, of this village, raised from a quarter of an acre of land 1,812 pounds of peas, which sold to Lowville canning factory for $.60 per hundred, bringing $28.29. The seed cost $3.75, leaving $24.54 net profit, or at the rate of $99.16 per acre. This beats the record."
