He "was the first pastor who settled west of the present-day Oneida and Otsego Counties".[3] He was the first pastor of the Presbyterian Church of Cazenovia in 1799. [1] Rev. Joshua and Margaret had about 12 children.

A newspaper clipping recalls Charles visiting the old academy in his old age, though where he lived and who/if he married has not been determined yet, but it doesn’t seem likely he is our elusive Charles “Russel” LEONARD.

Illustrations from “Pioneer Times in the Onondaga Country”, by Charles Carroll Smith. Regarding the Old Academy at Pompey, says “Rev. Joshua Leonard was the first principal and under him began a phenomenal career of one of the most famous academies in the state”.

Joshua's lineage is published in the "Re-union of the sons and daughters of the old town of Pompey", p. 329-332.
