Job Shirley was a veteran of the Revolutionary War. He was born in Massachusetts and moved his family to New York in or before 1810. He was counted on the census in Sempronius, Cayuga County, New York, in 1810, 1820, and 1830. In 1840, at the age of 83, he was counted on the census in Niles, Cayuga, New York. He may not have moved, however. It seems more likely that his land was in the portion of Sempronius that became Niles in 1833. (See the Formation of Cayuga County).
