Vena Dykeman was born on September 10, 1898, in Candor, New York. She married first to Percy Daniels, who died in 1940. Later, she married Thomas Slate, and therefore was always known as Grandma Slate. She died on February 5, 1986, in Cortland, New York, and rests at Cortland Rural Cemetery in Cortland in a plot with her first husband. Her 1986 obituary is shown here:
