John Dickinson was the son of William & Ann Dickinson of Sheffield, England. They lived in nearby Kimbersworth when John was a child. It is said that he had a brother named Joseph who went to Australia or New Zealand to make his fortune in the cattle business.
It wasn't until recently that I realized it couldn't have been John's brother Joseph, because he went to America in 1863 and died in Pittsburgh in 1881. So where did this story come from? Well, John had an uncle named Joseph Dickinson, born abt. 1790, who was christened at Sheffield on Feb. 17, 1790. Perhaps it was he who went to Australia or New Zealand?
A very helpful researcher named Jackie Dickinson who I found online several years ago forwarded a photo of her ancestor Joseph Dickinson. Could they have been related?
